Treatment of sleep apnea and loud snoring
Sleep apnea is a
potentially dangerous disorder with fairly benign symptoms such as loud
snoring. Morning headaches or daytime bouts of sleepiness area also common
occurrences. These symptoms are caused by intermittent periods when you
actually stop breathing.
Breathing cessation,
or apnea, last for many seconds to nearly a minute. The snoring is loud,
sometimes explosive.
In the
morning, the build-up of carbon dioxide in the blood causes headaches. The
lack of sleep can leave you drowsy and usually grouchy, during the day.
During sleep
apnea, the upper air passages in the mouth and throat are blocked (no one
is sure why). Dr. Rosenstein has the latest sleep monitoring equipment to
determine if you have a serious problem. One form of treatment that has
proven successful is wearing an acrylic mouth appliance during sleep to
keep the air passages open, but monitoring your sleep is an important
diagnostic procedure before prescribing treatment.
